Young Leaders Committee Kickoff Reception: An Evening That Reminded Us Why This Work Matters
The Catholic Schools Foundation (CSF) Young Leaders Committee officially kicked off another year of impact with a warm and meaningful reception hosted by longtime CSF supporters Cindy and Joe Wickwire. The evening brought together new and returning Young Leaders, alumni, staff, and friends—each at different stages in their careers, but united by a shared commitment to educational opportunity.
Mike, Executive Director, opened the evening with a heartfelt message about the importance of staying engaged, even when time and resources feel limited early in a career. “We understand that you might not have as much time or resources as you’d like, but stay with us, because the work is so important,” he said. “When you come to the dinner and meet our students—they shake your hand, look you in the eye, and say thank you—it means something. Or if you join us on a bus tour and meet our students, you see firsthand the difference your involvement makes.”
Mike shared a story from a recent bus tour, where an eighth-grade student proudly led the group through her school and spoke about her future plans. Despite experiencing homelessness and sometimes staying on couches or in her familys car, her school remains a place of stability, hope, and belonging. “That’s what you make possible by working with us and participating in our programs,” he emphasized.
Cindy Wickwire echoed Mike’s sentiment, especially for first-time attendees. “Just taking that step is tremendously appreciated. Participation may start small, but once you meet our students and understand the impact, it becomes very hard to walk away,” she said. Cindy added that she expects many attendees to continue their involvement for decades, building lasting relationships with students and the CSF community.
Joe Wickwire shared his own introduction to CSF over 20 years ago, recalling a brief but powerful pitch that stayed with him: education is the greatest enabler. He highlighted the exponential impact that education can have, not just on students, but on entire communities. Joe shared a remarkable story of a student the Wickwires supported who went on to graduate successfully and is now a fifth-grade teacher—demonstrating the lasting, ripple effect of CSF’s work. With 4,300 students served this year alone and a 98% graduation rate, the impact of CSF is both measurable and deeply personal.
As the evening concluded, the message was clear: involvement with CSF is not just meaningful it’s transformative. For the students whose lives are changed, and for the Young Leaders who discover that this work stays with you for decades.
