Rising Star: Jorge Ortiz

May 4th, 2022

Here at CSF, we love hearing about the triumphs and victories our Scholars experience. As part of our end-of-the-school-year celebration, we took the opportunity to interview some of our incredible scholars so we could share their experiences with you.

Jorge Ortiz - Malden Catholic '22 & St. Theresa School, Somerville '18

Jorge will be attending Stonehill College in the Fall. He was also one of our student speakers at our 2022 Building Minds Scholarship Fund Celebration.

Q: We know you're interested in studying Computer Science and Computer Engineering, what drew you towards those fields?

Well when I was a kid anytime any technical issues came up in my family I would be the one who would have to figure it out. I also never had a passion for anything in particular but from what I have researched, computer science allows you to solve problems with the help of others and I think that is something I would enjoy.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in college.

I am most looking forward to meeting new people and adjusting to a new environment.

Q: What is a dream career you’d love to have after college?

After college I would love to become a software engineer.

Q: How has receiving a Catholic education from Malden Catholic helped you be a successful student and prepare for your future?

It has blessed me with many opportunities I would not have if I had not gone to Catholic school. I’ve been able to connect with peers and teachers alike in a meaningful way. I was taught not only Calculus and English but I was also taught how to be a good person and how to carry myself

Q: Did you have a teacher from school who really inspired you or helped you on your academic journey? How did they help?

Mr. Hickey has inspired me and helped me out tremendously in my high school career. Not only did he teach me math for two years in a row but he also taught me many other things in life even in just the way he talks and carries himself. He has always made sure I was doing alright and on top of the things I needed to be doing. Without my Malden Catholic education I would have never been able to meet Mr. Hickey I can really say he has impacted my life.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone who may be earlier on in their academic career and thinking about their future?

Do not get overwhelmed and focus on the present and near future. Take every challenge and opportunity head on one thing at a time. Life is a juggling act where you have to balance between school, family , friends , sports and personal hobbies. Once you find your balance you will find succeeding so much easier.

Q: Do you have any favorite memories or things you'll miss about your time at Malden Catholic?

I will definitely miss being around all those people I have been with and around for 4 years. The brotherhood that we formed and all had is truly something special and is something I will definitely miss.

We're so proud of our scholars and the feats they've accomplished. And without the support of our incredible community, we wouldn't be able to help as many students as we do. You can directly support CSF Scholars like Jorge visiting HERE to learn more and help change lives.
